The Workshop Kitchen team from Palm Springs has acquired the space
There’s a big flip coming to one of the busier dining stretches of La Brea soon, as rustic Odys + Penelope will close next month following a sale. The often-busy four year old California grill restaurant from the famed Hatfield family will hold its final night of service at the end of July.
In its place comes Workshop Kitchen, perhaps the best and most identifiable modern restaurant in Palm Springs. Chef/owner Michael Beckman has been keen to open in Los Angeles proper for some time, and now he’s got his chance. The two restaurants already share a sensibility design-wise, from the bow truss ceiling to the open space and industrial touches. It’s also likely that the big, open hearth from Odys + Penelope will remain intact through the transition. Eater reached out to Beckman, who confirmed the news of the purchase.
Reached for comment, Karen Hatfield says that the decision to sell was “not driven by the economics of the restaurant,” but rather that her and partner Quinn Hatfield are simply “ready to move into a new direction artistically.” For now they’ll be taking time off, but with an eye towards a new opening of some kind next year.
The Hatfields have long been an anchor for the Los Angeles restaurant scene, having operated their eponymous fine dining restaurant on Melrose (now Auburn) to much acclaim. They also still run Sycamore Kitchen on La Brea, and for a time operated the Mighty in Downtown. Expect Workshop Kitchen to open in 2020.
