The Girl Flipper: How HGTV Star Darlene Crystal Combines House Flipping with Philanthropy

In the dynamic realm of real estate, few stories resonate as powerfully as that of Darlene Crystal, affectionately known as The Girl Flipper and an HGTV star. This isn’t just a nickname—it’s a badge of honor that speaks to her unwavering devotion to transforming well-worn houses into breathtaking abodes. With a seasoned eye for hidden gems and an artisan's touch, Darlene has dedicated years to mastering the art of the flip, revealing the beauty and promise in spaces that have eagerly awaited a second chance.

An Organic Journey

Darlene's journey into flipping houses wasn’t born from a meticulously crafted business plan but rather unfolded organically. “I didn’t set out to create a business; it just happened,” she shares. With each house she transformed, Darlene discovered a newfound joy in collaboration, realizing that working with others not only enhanced her projects but also enriched her experience.

“Flipping houses became my canvas,” she explains, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “When I bring people into the journey, it elevates my passion to another level.” This desire to collaborate led her to the Women’s Council of Realtors, where she connected with professionals from diverse backgrounds, including accountants and Fortune 500 executives.

“It was eye-opening,” Darlene reflects. “People are looking for someone who can grow with them, and that’s what truly interests me.”

A Heart for Philanthropy

Beyond the walls of real estate, Darlene's heart beats for philanthropy. In addition to flipping houses, she has been known to dedicate her time to orphanages, delivering carts of food to ensure children had the nourishment they needed for months. "That experience was transformative," she recalls. "It ignited a desire within me to make a difference." For example, she has contributed efforts to organizations such as the House of Ruth, providing support to battered women and conducting clothing drives. Now, Darlene has extended her charitable efforts through the establishment of her own 501(c)(3) nonprofit called She Builds Foundation. Dedicated to remodeling a property she owns in California to be a home for women and children escaping domestic violence—a safe house—she is currently seeking sponsorship for the 1,800 square foot roof to be refurbished with shingle material. While her philanthropic focus has evolved, her heart remains steadfast in its mission to uplift those in need.

"I feel a strong pull to return to the orphanage work, but for now, I'm finding ways to give back that resonate with my heart," she explains, embodying a deep commitment to community service.

Opening Doors for Investors

Darlene has opened the door for friends, family, and even past clients to partner with her on projects, maximizing their profit potential. “It’s a beautiful blend of partnerships,” she says. “By inviting those close to me into this journey, we create a community that thrives together.”

Her model caters to each investor's unique needs, fostering an environment of trust and transparency. “We have a variety of ways to collaborate,” she explains, emphasizing her commitment to finding the perfect fit for everyone involved. “Whether they want to be hands-on partners or prefer a more passive role, I make sure their investment aligns with their comfort level.”

With returns ranging from 10% to 20%, Darlene ensures her investors feel engaged and empowered. “The excitement truly shines when they have skin in the game,” she shares. “When we profit together, it creates a sense of shared success that is incredibly rewarding.”

Latest Venture

Her newest venture, Harvard & Yale, a coffee shop located in the charming village of Claremont, opened its doors in January 2025. In addition to the beloved classic cappuccino, it offers a bespoke retro ambiance accented with a touch of red from the entrance door. Classic Nike "kicks" are artfully positioned as decor on the floor next to a minimally chic floor-length gold mirror. Nearby, shelves of merch echo her heart to build community while whispering a classic cool, timeless trend for all who join the movement.

Sharing the heart behind the business, they explain, "Our vision was to create a welcoming space where the community can gather, enjoy great coffee, and explore unique clothing that appeals to all ages. Being located near Harvard Ave and on Yale Street is a constant reminder of the rich history and academic excellence that surrounds us. We're thrilled to be surrounded by esteemed institutions, universities, and colleges that inspire us, including Harvard and Yale, whose prestige continues to motivate our vision."

A Vision for the Future

Darlene’s portfolio spans single-family homes to multi-family properties, including new developments and ADU conversions. Her investors, diverse in their preferences, find comfort in her adaptability. “I’m grateful to say that 100% of my investors have stayed on, continuing to partner with me on new projects,” Darlene reveals, a smile spreading across her face. “It’s all about aligning our goals and finding that sweet spot together.”

As Darlene continues to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of real estate, her commitment to collaboration, community, and compassion remains at the forefront. Her journey is not just about renovation; it’s a celebration of potential—revealing the beauty and promise in spaces that have been waiting for their moment.
