Tim Tebow Impact through the Power of Bold Faith
Tim Tebow’s résumé reads like a modern American sports legend. A Heisman Trophy winner, a national champion, a first-round NFL draft pick, a bestselling author, and the founder of a global humanitarian foundation, Tim Tebow Foundation.
His accomplishments are public and widely known. Yet before all of that, Tebow has always identified himself by what he considers his truest identity. He is a follower of Christ.
It was January 2009. Tebow was the quarterback for the University of Florida, weeks away from the national championship game. Preparation had narrowed his world to the discipline of elite athletics: the next play, the next drive, the next assignment. In the weeks leading up to the game, Tebow made a deliberate decision. He had worn Bible verses beneath his eyes for years, written into his eye black as a personal expression of faith. This time, he chose John 3:16.
For Tebow, the verse carried the essence of the Christian faith in a single sentence. It was simple, foundational, and the one he believed the moment called for.
Florida won the national championship. Tebow played, celebrated, and moved on, believing the decision had been just that, a single moment on a single night. Two days later, he learned otherwise.
During the game, ninety four million people had searched for “John 3:16.” The number stunned him. What began as a personal expression of faith had traveled far beyond anything he imagined. God, he realized, had taken something small and multiplied it.
Three years later, on January 8, 2012, Tebow was an NFL quarterback with the Denver Broncos, preparing for a playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The verse beneath his eyes felt like a closed chapter, something finished long ago. The game went to overtime. Tebow threw a touchdown pass on the first play. Denver won.
Right before stepping into the press conference, Tebow was stopped in the stadium hallway and told that what had just happened on the field carried a significance far greater than the win itself.
They told him, “Timmy, this is exactly three years from the night you first wore John 3:16 in your eye black. And during this game: You threw for 316 yards. Your yards per rush were 3.16. Your yards per completion were 31.6. Time of possession was 31:06. The TV rating for the game was 31.6. And during the game, 90 million people googled ‘John 3:16.’”
“And it’s the number one trending thing on social media right now.”
Reflecting on that moment, Tebow shares, “I just stood in that hallway thinking, ‘God, I had no idea You were doing anything like this.’ I thought that whole verse under the eyes thing was over three years ago. But God was still weaving it together. It reminded me again how big God is. He took a decision I made three and a half years earlier to put Philippians 4:13 on my face, then to change it for one game to John 3:16, something I thought was small, temporary, and finished, and He was still using it years later to point millions of people to the gospel.
That’s the kind of God we serve. He has an awesome plan. You might not see what He’s doing. You might have no idea how He’s working. But when we step out with a little courage and boldness, God can do incredible things in us and through us. He’s a big God. He can perform miracles. I really believe He wants to.
And you have to understand this: the God of this universe loves you so much that He sent His Son to die for you. If He loves you that much, is He not going to want to fight for you? Is He not going to want to fight with you? Is He not going to want to come through for you?
That doesn’t mean life will be easy. It won’t. But it does mean that with Him, it will be worth it.”
Tim Tebow’s story is not about coincidence or spectacle. It is about obedience placed in public view and a willingness to trust God with the outcome. When faith is lived openly and without apology, it does not fade with the moment. It multiplies.
